Why Do You Hide?

“And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”

Genesis 3:8-10

When God created the world and breathed life into His first image bearers, Adam and Eve, the Bible tells us that they “were both naked and were not ashamed” (Genesis 2:25). Adam and Eve had not yet sinned, and they were without shame. When was the last time that you can honestly say that you were without any shame? There is a big difference between guilt and shame that is important to mention. Guilt is acknowledging that we have done something wrong. Shame is identifying yourself as wrong. We learn shame very early on in life, and as such, we learn how to hide. Just as Adam and Eve did in Genesis 3:8-10:

And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”

Why were they suddenly ashamed? Why did they hide? This is where sin entered the world. Right before they hid themselves from God, Adam and Eve allowed themselves to be deceived, they put away their trust in God and believed that He was not as good as He says He is, and they did the one thing He asked them not to do. The result was shame, fear, and hiding from their Creator who they previously had never been separated from before. Now, all of us are born into sin and shame, hiding our spiritual nakedness from our Creator who is calling us out to be in relationship with Him again. Romans 8:1 gives us the good news that:

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

Through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, we can be in right relationship with God, and live without shame and condemnation! We no longer have to hide. When we confess and believe in Jesus as our Lord and Savior we no longer have to identify with our sin. Rather, our identity is secure in Christ as forgiven and free!
